Tasting Notes

Morgenster Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Medium to intense concentration of fruit flavours, this is an intense oil that leaves a very clean finish. As you swallow the oil you will notice a pleasant bitterness on the roof of your mouth and a peppery burn down the back of your throat. Wonderful with grilled fish and vegetables.

Morgenster Monte Marcello Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Sweet creamy flavours of toasted almonds and creamed honey. This is a delicate oil that has a very clean finish. As you swallow the oil you will notice the soft, velvet and creamy feel on the roof of your mouth with hints of vanilla and halva. Excellent over delicate dishes and breads.

Morgenster Don Carlo Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Intense peppery flavours with a slightly bitter taste. Characteristic green flavours of artichokes, green tomato and tomato leaf will follow. As you swallow the oil you will notice a peppery tickle in the back of your throat. Perfect for hearty meat and bean dishes.


History & Culture

Morgenster’s late owner Giulio Bertrand set up a long-term partnership with Prof. Giuseppe Fontanazza of the Italian Institute of Olive Research and imported 2,000 olive trees covering 14 Italian varieties from the length and breadth of Italy. The best Italian varietals grown in the soil and sun of the Western Cape and a state-of-the-art olive oil extraction facility have, for over 10 years, resulted in Morgenster being voted one of the best Extra Virgin Olive Oils in the world. In 2012 the SA Olive Association awarded Giulio Bertrand its Life Time Achievement award for his contribution to the South African olive industry. Some 4,3 million of the 5 million trees planted in SA since 1994 originated from his original 2,000 trees.
